In an age of quick texts and instant messages, something beautifully old-fashioned is happening in WCS’s fourth and fifth grade classrooms: real letters are being written, mailed, and eagerly awaited.

The Grandpals Pen Pal Program pairs students with senior pen pals from local churches and the Mendon Senior Center, creating meaningful intergenerational friendships through the simple gift of handwritten correspondence. The purpose is twofold: strengthening writing skills for students while building genuine community connections with our Grandpals.

Students share stories about school, books they are reading, favorite sports teams, and everyday joys. In return, Grandpals write back with life stories, thoughtful questions, wisdom, and encouragement. “This is the second time I have had a pen pal; it is such an honor to have a new little friend to talk to,” said one Grandpal. “She brings joy into my life with every letter I receive. It is a great program, and I love it!”

Students feel the joy just as deeply. Logan, a fifth grader, proudly noted, “She likes the Red Sox, just like me!” And Madi reflected, “I like having a Grandpal because I learn about what traditions they did when they were kids.”

Adding a bit of mystery and excitement, some Grandpals have chosen to remain anonymous until the end of the year, leading to a much-anticipated “big reveal” that students are already counting down to. “It is wonderful to connect with someone from this much younger generation,” shared another Grandpal. “I love being able to tell stories of my life, and I’m happy that my pen pal shared the book they were reading, so I could also read it and have a point of discussion. And my pen pal writes in beautiful cursive!”
