On Tuesday, August 29, Whitinsville Christian School began the 2017-2018 school year the way it has for 89 years, with a convocation ceremony. In addition to celebrating the beginning of the school year, the opening of a new gymnasium and performing arts center was commemorated with a ribbon cutting.

Students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and special guests were buzzing with excitement as they flowed into the new gymnasium for the first official event of the new school year. After the class of 2018 escorted the class of 2030 into the gym, Lance Engbers, WCS Headmaster, offered a warm welcome to all in attendance and Russ VanderBaan, President of the WCS Board of Trustees, opened with prayer.

Senator Michael Moore was joined by Senator Ryan Fattman and Representative David Muradian as he presented an official citation offering congratulations from the State Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to WCS in recognition of the ribbon cutting and opening of the new facilities.

“Less than three years ago, the campaign leadership first gathered to envision a desired future for this remarkable school,” said John Esler, WCS Parent and Co-Chair of the building campaign. “God willing, when people come together, and rise together, great things are possible.”

The new additions to the school include an expansion of the high school with over 5,000 sq. ft. of new classroom space. The major project for the 40-acre campus is a new 30,000+ sq. ft. building that is home to a state-of-the-art performing arts center and gymnasium. The honor of cutting the ribbon was shared by Jackie Cloutier, senior and Student Council President, and kindergarten student, Jacob Tomasino.

WCS is quickly making good use of the expanded campus. The volleyball teams had the pleasure of playing the first official games in the new gym on Wednesday, September 6. WCS will celebrate Homecoming on September 29 and 30, giving many alumni their first look at the new space. The WCS Drama Club is very excited about their upcoming musical in the new performing arts center in November of this year. The WCS Admissions Office is holding a High School Open House on Saturday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m. and will showcase the signature curriculum programs including engineering and technology offerings, as well as the strengths in performing arts.
