WCHS Summer Academy

WCHS Summer Academy offers a wide range of summer preparatory and enrichment classes for students entering grades 9-12.

Fee Structure for High School Classes:

  • 1 course – $150
  • 2 courses – $275
  • 3 courses – $350
  • 4 courses – $400

*Additional courses $100 each

Academic Coaching & Study Skills 

What kind of learner are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? How should you take notes? Prepare for a test? Plan for projects and school?

In this class, we will answer those questions and more as you gear up for either your first year of high school or your first year at WCS.

Algebra I Prep

For students entering Algebra I, this class will be a two-week refresher of pre algebra/algebra skills.

For students entering Algebra II, this class will be a two-week refresher of algebra skills.

Book Club 2.0 

Winter or Summer, Coffee or Tea, Beach or Mountains, Fiction or Nonfiction. Why stress your brain out by having to make a choice?

In this summer book group, we will be reading two books – one fiction (Ignite the Sun by Hanna Howard) and one non-fiction (Radium Girls by Kate Moore). Be prepared to read, learn something new, and participate in lively literary discussion.

College Essay Writing

For students entering Grade 12, this class will help students plan, draft, and revise college essays before the start of school. If space allows, students from Grade 11 may register.

Cottagecore

Do you listen to Taylor Swift’s Folklore album on repeat? Does your mouth water at the thought of a rustic sourdough bread? Are you a grandma trapped in a teenager’s body?

If any of this describes you, join us for an exploration of all things cottagecore. Instruction will be provided in skills such as beginner’s knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, and more.

English Refresher

This course will review secondary level English basics for students transitioning from remote to in-person learning. Using John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men as an anchor text, students will practice both analytical and compositional skills in preparation for the fall.

Geometry Prep

For students entering Geometry, this class will be a two-week refresher of pre algebra/algebra skills.

Musical Theater

In this musical theater class, students will have the opportunity to work on different genres of musical theater each class. Students will bring in their prepared song (with track) to work in class.

Class 1: Uptempo of choice

Class 2: Ballad of choice

Class 3: Contemporary musical theater song of choice

Class 4: Assigned Broadway standard. Each week, students will need to come to class with their song memorized.

Myths of American History

In this course, we will consider a selection of historic events and personalities and look at what has been commonly thought about them and that isn’t necessarily true. In some cases, false ideas have been propagated, and in other instances, the whole story has not been told.

This class will ask you to use historical thinking skills to try to untangle or uncover a better grasp on the truth.

Recycled Art

This is a Recycled Art class that will include a few mini projects that are both decorative and functional.

Meets: August 2-6th  |  3:00 – 4:30 p.m. daily (5 sessions)

Spanish II/III Prep

For students entering Spanish II or III, this class will be a two-week refresher of Spanish I and II skills.

Skin Care – Loving the Skin You Are In

This course will examine how natural and synthetic skin-care products are developed, and then discuss how these products affect different skin types and conditions. You will also participate in making different natural skin-care products that are meant to match your skin type.

In all of this, though, we will also study how an individual’s beauty, especially in the eyes of God, is founded in more than a person’s superficial appearance.

The Vegan Lifestyle

A plant-based lifestyle is more than “Don’t you just eat, like, vegetables?” Being vegan is better for your health, better for your athletic performance, better for animals, better for the hungry in our world, better for the planet, and also asks the question “Is being vegan Biblical?”

If you are an athlete, an animal lover, a pet owner, someone who wants a healthy planet for your entire life, or someone who is interested in learning more about the vegan lifestyle, this course is for you! During our 6 sessions we will explore the areas of the vegan lifestyle: Food, Animal Treatment, Environment, Shopping (Clothing & Makeup), and a Biblical viewpoint.

The course will include food, documentary segments, and a special guest speaker.
